The great thing about not doing any homework for this trip is that I've been pleasantly surprised by everything. Story of my life really.

First big surprise was Pompeii. I thought it would just be a pile of rocks but in fact its a city that was buried by an volcano and then rediscovered an dug out by dedicated archeologists. Quite amazing. You can see the houses the romans lived in, the roads (including chariot tracks), plumbing, stores, brothels...everything. I was impressed and I've seen a lot that has impressed me in the last four and half weeks.

Like most tourist spots in Europe it is a bit spoilt by the hawkers and flea markets, but I suppose you have to see it all as part of the charm. I've managed to avoid paying for going to the toilet so far, through discipline and the belief that some things are just not for sale.

Second big surprise for the day was the road into Sorrento. An amazing coastal road that winds its way down to the southern Italian resort town, breathtaking in parts, particulary when two buses meet! Must tip the bus driver at the end of this trip, he's done well.

To an olive farm house tonight for dinner and then the Island of Capri tomorrow, onwards we soldier.
